The Hovawart is a powerful, rather long and long-coated dog of medium size with distinct character. Size of male: 63 - 70 cm.. Size of bitch: 58 - 65 cm. Weight is not pointed out in the stanard, but must be appointed to size. Normally from 28 kg. to 45 kg.
The Hovawart has a very beautiful, shiny long coat with long banners on the foreleg and an elegant shaggy tail. The coat does not need much brushing as there is only a little undercoat.
The Hovawart has a reputation as a perfect family dog and for being very fond of children. As other farm dogs it does not roam about and is known as having no passion for hunting. It has a strong herding instinct and is very connected to its family and home.
Temprement Normally it is a big, loving good-natured and well-balanced dog, but contains both courage, fight and defensive power as a guarding dog. It is very intelligent and creative. You will be surprised what it can do.
It learns easily but you must have patience and let it learn by play and love. What it has once learned , it will never forget. But never, ever push or bully a Hovawart, this will only result in a mental blocking. You will loose its friendship and gain nothing.
When young it needs a lot of experience (street walking, children, people and other dogs), play and tasks. It needs resonable exercise. |
